  7. Thank you for your purchase of McAfee WebScan. As with all
  8. McAfee products, we would like to have your comments. If you
  9. have not already done so, please complete and return the
  10. registration card and include your suggestions or comments.
  11. If you downloaded the product from a McAfee online service,
  12. you need to complete the registration form provided in the
  13. file README.WRI. If you bought WebScan from a store, a
  14. registration card and license agreement is included in the box.

  16. Please be aware that this version of WebScan is the McAfee
  17. domestic release for the United States and Canada. The
  18. Internet access method uses a domestic, 800 number to
  19. establish the online connection. Note that the international
  20. version of WebScan will soon be available.

  37. Product Highlights
  38.  
  39. McAfee's WebScan protects against virus infections to your system
  40. from files attached to your mail messages or files you download
  41. from the Internet. Here are the main functions of WebScan:
  42.  
  43. - Virus protection--the anti-virus function of WebScan is activated
  44.   anytime you download executable and Microsoft Word document files
  45.   from the Internet or save these types of files to disk from a
  46.   Pegasus Mail message attachment.
  47.  
  48. - Electronic mail through Pegasus Mail, which is designed for ease-of-use,
  49.   with maximum power and functionality. Pegasus Mail is a popular electronic
  50.   mail system with over 4 million users.
  51.  
  52. - SPRY Mosaic is the WebScan Web browser. It is a sophisticated graphical
  53.   Internet browsing application that gives you access to the Internet. It is
  54.   automatically installed on your system, and can also be launched from
  55.   Pegasus Mail, so that you have an instant Internet connection.

  59. What's the difference between retail and online?
  60.  
  61. The version of WebScan you buy in the store (retail) and the one you
  62. download from a McAfee online service are basically the same. However,
  63. please note that only the retail version offers these features:
  64.  
  65. - Ability to choose a Internet service provider other than InterServ
  66.   (Compuserv). If you purchased the online version, Internet access
  67.   is ONLY available through InterServ.
  68.  
  69. - Secured Internet transactions is available ONLY with the retail
  70.   WebScan product. The online version does not offer secure HTTP.
  71.  
  72. - Pegasus Mail encryption capabilities are offered ONLY with the
  73.   retail WebScan product.

  77. Installation
  78.  
  79. Review these basic requirements for installing and running WebScan.
  80.  
  81. - Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT
  82. - CONFIG.SYS set to at least FILES=50
  83. - Internet access through a LAN, or using a modem capable of
  84.   9600 baud or faster and connected to a telephone line
  85. - External modems powered on, if you use this type of modem
  86. - Note the communications port to which the modem is connected.

  88. Your main steps for completing the WebScan installation are:
  89.  
  90. - Start the Installer and identify the destination for copying
  91.   files.
  92.  
  93. - Identify the Web browsers to which you want to add the anti-virus
  94.   component, WebSafe.
  95.  
  96. - Enter configuration information for SPRY Mosaic Web Browser.
  97.  
  98. - Set up the Pegasus Mail component.
  99.  
  100. Read the following paragraphs for details about installing from diskette
  101. or from the BBS and McAfee Web site.

  104. FROM DISKETTE
  105.  
  106. If you purchased the retail version of WebScan, you received four diskettes.
  107. You also received a printed "Getting Started" guide that you can use to
  108. supplement the installation procedure.
  109.  
  110. To install, insert Disk 1 and then enter the following command in the
  111. Windows Run box:
  112.  
  113. x:setup
  114.  
  115. where x is the drive that contains the diskette.
  116.  
  117. Then follow the instructions on the installation dialogs.

  120. FROM THE BBS OR WEB SITE
  121.  
  122. WebScan is available from the BBS or the McAfee Web site
  123. (www.mcafee.com). You'll need to download these files:
  124.

  131. Decompressing Your Files:
  132.  
  133. Use PKUNZIP to decompress the WebScan product files
  134. either onto floppy diskettes or into a directory on your
  135. hard drive or server. These files are automatically copied
  136. into the appropriate directory structure when you unzip them.
  137.  
  138. Before you install, you'll want to verify that the files you
  139. downloaded are exactly the same as when we posted them online.
  140. We recommend you perform this task for maximum anti-virus
  141. protection. Read the following paragraphs to learn how to
  142. validate your file.

  145. Validating Your Files:
  146.  
  147. Included in the files you downloaded is the Validate program
  148. (version 2.0.1). Validate is a file-authentication program that
  149. you can use to check program files for signs of tampering.
  150. Validate uses two methods of generating Cyclic Redundancy Checks
  151. (CRC's), and then displays the information so you can compare
  152. these statistics against the "known value" for the program files.
  153. The dual CRC checking provides a high degree of security.
  154. The known value you use for validation is usually provided by the
  155. author of the program, or you may receive it from a trusted
  156. information database.  You can find the statistics for
  157. WebScan in the file PACKING.LST.
  158.  
  159. To confirm that a program file has not been tampered with, run the
  160. Validate program and then record the validation data produced.
  161. Compare this data against the file statistics the program author has
  162. specified. If the information matches, most likely the program
  163. has not been modified since McAfee put the files online.
  164.

  166. To run VALIDATE, enter the following command:
  167.  
  168.      VALIDATE <path spec>
  169.  
  170. where <pathspec> is the name of a directory and file. (The
  171. wildcard characters, "*" and "?", can be used when specifying
  172. <pathspec>.)
  173.  
  174. The VALIDATE program displays the following information:
  175.  
  176.      <name of directory>
  177.      name of file (starting at row 1)
  178.      extension of file (starting at row 10)
  179.      size of file (starting at row 15)
  180.      date of file (starting at row 25)
  181.      time of file (starting at row 35)
  182.      check method 1 (starting at row 44)
  183.      check method 2 (starting at row 51)

  189. Starting the Install Program:
  190.  
  191. Before you install, we recommend that you access the online
  192. "Getting Started" manual which contains installation instructions.
  193. To do this follow the steps below:
  194.  
  195.    *  Start the Acrobat Reader.
  196.  
  197.       NOTE: If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader, you can
  198.       download it from the McAfee home page located at www.mcafee.com.
  199.       Once you arrive at the home page, just select 'Download McAfee,'
  200.       'Download McAfee Product,' and get the file ACROREAD from the
  201.       utility area. Then run ACROREAD.EXE and follow the instructions
  202.       on the screen to install the reader.
  203.  
  204.    *  Open the WEBTOC.PDF file from the DISK0 directory.
  205.  
  206.    *  Click on the chapter containing the information you'd like to view.
  207.

  209. To install WebScan after downloading the product files:
  210.  
  211. - Run SETUP.EXE, located on either the first diskette or in the DISK1
  212.   directory, depending on the destination to which you decompressed the files. 
  213.  
  214. - When you are prompted for Disk 2, either place the second diskette into
  215.   the drive or change the directory name to DISK2 and click OK.

  219. Using the WebScan Anti-virus Feature
  220.  
  221.  
  222. WHEN TO SCAN
  223.  
  224. For WebScan to perform virus checks successfully, you need to select
  225. one file at a time to download. If you select a second file to
  226. download while the first is being scanned, an error message is displayed.
  227.  
  228.  
  229. WHAT GETS SCANNED
  230.  
  231. WebScan checks for and alerts you to viruses in executable program files and
  232. in Microsoft Word document files. WebScan determines whether files are
  233. executables or documents based on the data type identified in your Browser.
  234. For example, Microsoft Word document files are usually identified as the
  235. data type 'application/msword'.
  236.  
  237. At the time of this release, WebScan checks the following data types
  238. for viruses:
  239.  
  240.     NOTE: We are continually adding to the list of data types checked.
  241.  
  242. application/octet-stream
  243. application/octet-string
  244. application/x-msdownload
  245. application/msword
  246. application/x-zip-compressed
  247. application/zip
  248.  
  249. Refer to your Browser documentation if you need to specify a different
  250. data type for downloading files.

  253. ADDING WEBSCAN TO A WEB BROWSER
  254.  
  255. The WebScan anti-virus component, WebSafe, is automatically added and has been
  256. tested with the following Web browsers:
  257.  
  258. - NetScape Navigator (16-bit version for Windows 3.x and Windows 95;
  259.   the 32-bit version is not supported)
  260. - All versions of SPRY Mosaic
  261. - Netcom NetCruiser.
  262.  
  263. However, you can add WebSafe to Web browsers other than those listed above.
  264. You can use the following procedure as a guide.
  265.  
  266.     NOTE: We recommend that you do not install WebSafe to the Microsoft Internet
  267.     Browser. We are currently experiencing unpredictable results during our testing.
  268.     However, WebSafe may be compatible with this browser in a future release.

  270. FOR QUARTERDECK QMosaic
  271.    * Select Tools/Preferences
  272.    * Display the Data Engine tab page
  273.    * Select a data type (for example, Application Octet-stream)
  274.    * Click on External Viewer Application
  275.    * Click in the text box and enter the following command
  276.  
  277.     x:\MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\AV\WEBSCAN.EXE /SAVE /BUSY
  278.  
  279.      where x: is the drive that contains the \MCAFEE directory
  280.  
  281.     NOTE: Be careful to click in the text box first before you
  282.     begin typing, since the MIMEtypes have speed search!

  285. FOR AMERICA ONLINE (2.5 Windows only)
  286.    *  Browse the Web
  287.    *  Click the Prefs button
  288.    *  Click the Helper Apps button at top right to display the "Modify" dialog
  289.    *  Click Use Separate Application and browse for WEBSCAN.EXE (it is installed
  290.     under the directory \MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\AV)
  291.    *  Enter the switches /SAVE /BUSY after WEBSCAN.EXE
  292.    *  Save the settings.

  296. Switching from a Network Connection to a Modem
  297.  
  298. The SPRY Switcher program is automatically installed with
  299. WebScan. This program allows you to quickly switch from a network
  300. communication method to a modem. During installation, the files
  301. SWITCH.EXE and SWITCH.HLP are copied to this
  302. directory:
  303.  
  304. \MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\BROWSE\BIN
  305.  
  306. In addition, the Switcher program is automatically configured.
  307. However, if you install a new WINSOCK.DLL (the program that allows
  308. applications to communicate on the Internet), you'll need
  309. to set up the Switcher program. Please contact McAfee's
  310. Customer Service if you need help with this configuration. Refer
  311. to the contact information provided below for the phone number.

  314. Program Anomalies
  315.  
  316. If you decide to uninstall WebScan, check for the existence of
  317. the file WINSOCK.LAN in the following directory:
  318.  
  319. - In Windows 3.1 and 95, look in the \WINDOWS
  320. - In Windows NT, look in the \SYSTEM32 under your Windows NT
  321.   directory
  322.  
  323. If the file exists, rename it as follows:
  324.  
  325. WINSOCK.DLL
  326.
